Garden Shed Sizes: How To Pick The Perfect Shed
Last Updated: 11 Apr 17
By Simply Sheds
If you haven't already got a slab down, and a space marked out, picking the perfect shed size can be a little tricky and it's important to take a little time to make sure that the shed you choose will work for you.
If you've already got a slab, an existing shed you need to replace, or a space properly mapped out, then the easiest thing to do is select the size from our range that best suites what you have currently. Keep in mind, unless you want to go custom build and spend 2-3 times the price; to get a good deal, and not overpay, you might need to give up a few mm here and there to make it fit what you have now.
When you're starting from scratch, there are two things to consider:
1) How much space do I have?
2) What do I want to store in it?
Point #1 is first for a reason, if you want to put your ride on mower in your shed, but only have a 2x2 space, well, you might be in a spot of trouble.
Essentially what you are doing here is mapping out how wide, and how deep you want the shed to be. We actually recommend that you space it out using stakes and strings, or if you know what you want, have the slab poured first. Something to keep in mind if you are having your slab poured, make sure you allow 100mm of extra size on each side of the slab so that the shed fits properly, and if you want to make sure it doesn't leak underneath, have it rebated.
Once you know the space you have available, it's worth planning what exactly you're going to be storing because you may not need as much space as you think, or you might find that you need a little more.
If it's just some tools and your good ole garden variety knick-knacks, you can probably get away with a narrow shed (especially if you are looking at some sort of tighter than normal space).
When you start looking into a place to store your lawn mower, or if you are considering having a bench of some description then you are probably looking towards the 3m garden sheds that allow for some of that extra space (with most having double doors).
At the top end of the spectrum, you've got the workshop sheds, which are only really needed if you intend to use them as a workshop, or some serious storage area. Keep in mind, that in most places in Australia, anything over 10sqm requires council approval (if you are looking at bigger than this it's worth checking with your council first) so as a rough guide, if you are looking at a 3x3 shed or less, you should be fine.
Garden Shed Kits: Custom VS Kit Form Sheds - Which Should You Choose
The first (and main) reason people prefer a kit form shed is the cost. As a rule of thumb, you can expect to pay 2-3 times the amount for a full custom shed as you would a kit form of a similar size. We made the choice back in 2012 to only sell kit form sheds, what this means is that all our sheds come in a box with all the parts, instructions etc. all ready to be put together by our customers. Over the last few years we've sold well over 20,000 of these sheds with great response from our customers.
In our experience the only time you should consider a custom shed is if you really need an exact, almost to the mm measurement, and in some cases this is required (for example if you happened to need a 2.85 x 2.85 exact shed, or something that was 3m height instead of 2m).
Garden Shed Prices: What Will A New Shed Will Likely Cost You?
It comes down to how big of a shed you want, what features or extras you want it to have, and what style you are after... the fancier the shed, typically, the more it will cost. Based on your budget, here is a rough idea of where you'll get the best bang for your buck.
Sheds under $300 - Here you'd be looking at our tiniest shed, mostly you'll find something under the 1.5m x .8m range of sheds in this price bracket.
$300-$450 sheds - This sort of range will get you up to a 3.7m x 1.5m shed (which is probably why it's one of our most popular models, it's really great value), but typically you'll be looking at the 2.3m garden sheds for this price bracket.
$450-$600 sheds - This is where you can start to really pick and choose what you want. You can pickup a good 3x3 shed within this price bracket which is super affordable, falls under that 10sqm council issue (check with your council first!) and has a great deal of storage space.
$600-$750 sheds - In this price bracket you're starting to get into some of the more premier sheds in our range. As far as garden sheds go (basically anything that isn't a workshop), if you have this as your budget, most sizes will be available to you, so long as you aren't going for anything too fancy.
$750-$1000 sheds - These sheds are most of the "nicer" sheds, our regent ranges, some of the smaller timber sheds, and a couple of smaller workshops. Basically if you're in this sort of price range, you can pick and choose a shed to your liking.
Sheds over $1000 - Here you are looking at only the largest of garden sheds (looking at the 3 x 3.66 here) and then you move into the workshop sheds. If you've got the budget for more than $1000 for your shed, then you shouldn't have any issues in finding what you are looking for.
Australian Garden Sheds: Why Buying Australian Made Makes Sense
Patriotism aside, sheds are one of the few things you really need to consider purchasing as "Australia made". And the reason is simple, Australian manufacturers know Australian conditions. That's why we only work with Australian brands, we don't (or rather won't) work with any imported products, everything has to be made here, locally in Australia.
One major advantage to this is the ability to offer up to 30 years warranty on our products (most imported is 5-10 years). And while it's unlikely that you will need to take any of our brands up on that warranty, it's worth having the peace of mind.
The second is handling/dealing with problems, we've been to the factories where the sheds are manufactured, their defect rates are low (as low as .1% at the manufacturing level), which means that in the event that if there are any issues, they get solved quickly and efficiently.
